Some days, I just ain’t feelin’ it. You know what I’m talking about–you don’t feel like studying the Bible. The last thing you really feel like doing is humbling yourself before God and praying to Him. You get all in your feelings and you just want to say, “Whatever, I’ll just pick up where I was tomorrow.” Today was one of those days for me. My mind couldn’t be further from being stayed on Jesus. Like seriously.
But then I’m reminded: what if Jesus didn’t feel like it? He lived each and every day, submitted to God the Father while in His very nature being God (Philippians 2:6), living each day in His Father’s will, with us on His mind. What if He decided one day He just didn’t feel like it? What if He was like, “Father, I’m angry. The whole world hates me. Let me just go on and come back home and let them fend for themselves.” We’d be in a world of hurt right now if that was the case. But instead, Jesus pushed past His flesh and remained rooted in and connected God–that’s where His strength came from while on earth. He was constantly praying and in communion with God. Despite how He was feeling, He kept doing that. And guess what? We should be doing the same thing. When we remain rooted in and connected to God, we too will find our strength and peace. And quite honestly, it’s in those times we least feel like going to God that we most need to go to Him.
Prayer is a very selfless act because it requires you to focus on God, be humble, and seek God’s will instead of your own. You will find that your, “me, me, me” attitude has to be thrown out of the window in order to really grow into the Christian you need to be. So that means getting out of your feelings, dying to your flesh, and turning to God no matter how “painful” it feels right now.
Push past the feelings and seek God. God is love. And love is the glue that hold everything together when fickle, fleeting feelings start going haywire.
